The book village Fjærland / Mundal on the Sognefjord
It is one of the numerous arms of the Sognefjord, which towers here as Fjærlandsfjord 27 kilometers north. It is also called a green fjord, because the green and fertile environment is reflected in its waters. At its northernmost point, in the municipality of Fjærland, is Norway’s Glacier Museum. But today we want to discover another special feature of the Fjærlandsfjord: the small book village Mundal as the center of the municipality Fjærland. And so the book village Mundal is also more well-known under the name Bücherdorf Fjærland.
At the top of the Fjærlandsfjord we enjoy our breakfast in the parking lot. Camping is forbidden here for understandable reasons and so we breathe the morning peace. It rained in the evening, but fog and clouds have disappeared and the sunny light bathes the Fjærlandsfjord in rich colors.
Here in the valley there are larger fields for Norwegian conditions. A farmer laboriously builds another growing area with an excavator. Yes, sometimes fields are even blown up to gain acreage. A narrow road leads through the municipality of Fjærland on a dam whose sides with stone blocks protect the motorists from the crash in the Fjærlandsfjord.
We are curious and full of expectations as to how far this road would go. Ideal this tour along the Fjærlandsfjord actually for bicycles. Because on our way to the small book village Mundal as part of the municipality Fjærland, just known as the book village Fjærland.Small farms are built at the foot of the mountain range, on the opposite side romantic boathouses adorn the shores of Fjærlandsfjord. It is quiet here in May, when the landscape dives into the rich and fresh green of spring.
A few kilometers further on, the small book village Mundal opens. Actually, Mundal consists only of a road that ends in a dead end. On a hill in the middle of Mundal, the wooden church, bathed in fresh red, shines, whose history dates back to 1860.
The fact that you love books in the book village Mundal (book village Fjærland), combined with the typical love of the Norwegians, to be outside at every opportunity. Because everywhere in the village bookshelves are appropriate. Whether at the old boat shed, at the ferry terminal or at one or the other wall of the house – there are filled bookshelves everywhere.
Somehow the time seems to have stopped here. Old and simple wooden houses characterize Mundal and give their three hundred inhabitants a home. There are no pretentious cars, no show for the best attention, no catwalk of the vanities, here alone is the book in the center, used, read and loved.
Actually, everything in Mundal and the municipality of Fjærland revolves around the Jostedalsbreen, one of the most impressive glaciers in Norway. But between May and September, the book will be dedicated to a diverse cultural program.
Small art galleries and artisan shops complete the offer. The visit to the book village Fjærland ends with a stop at the bookstore Kaffistova at the end of the street.
During the summer we strongly recommend the ferry ride from Balestrand over the Fjærlandsfjord here to Mundal. From Mundal glacier tours are offered.
