Joel Meyerowitz was born in New York in 1938 and grew up in the Bronx. He first studied painting at Ohio State University (1959) and earned his living as a commercial artist in New York. But from 1962 he photographed intensively. First, he shot his motives with Kodachrome films exclusively in color.
Today he is one of the founders of Street Photography and New Color Photography.
He has received numerous awards in his life, including the Leica Hall of Fame Award in 2017. Again and again, the renowned museums around the world show his works as solo or group exhibitions.
His most recent and most impressive works include the 2011 series Aftermath, which deals with the destruction and rebuilding of the Word Trade Center. Today Joel Meyerowitz lives and works in Buonconvento in Italy and in New York.
